Introduction:

Robert graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts in 1975 and obtained his LLB in 1978. He articled under Thomas R. Braidwood, of the firm Braidwood & Company –the successor to the firm started by the venerable Angelo Branca – and from an early date, and as a result of him imbibing the culture of that firm, became fascinated by the “people side” of the practice of law. Drawn to the practice of litigation in the diverse areas of family law, criminal law, general civil litigation, Robert from the outset of his career displayed an interest in, and enthusiasm for, the problems of real people, diverse and challenging personal problems and the legal issues that they generated.

Over the course of a 34-year career, Robert gravitated increasingly toward the unique challenges of family law practice, finally stepping back from criminal law defence work about ten years ago. Robert was a long-time member of the Richmond Sunrise Rotary Club, finally leaving that organization after a ten-year involvement to become a board member at the private school, Fraser Academy, which caters to children with language and learning difficulties and dyslexia.

Robert served as chair of the board of directors at Fraser Academy. Following his tenure at Fraser, he joined the board of the Lower Mainland Assessment and Referral Service, a non-profit employment assistance program facilitator catering largely to employees in the forest industry. Following the winding up of that Society, Robert has joined as a board member, of the Richmond Multicultural Community Services Society and has been sitting on that board from the year 2011 to date. He has been involved with the University of British Columbia as an occasional instructor for the Law Students Legal Advice Program and supervisor of their clinics.

Robert is one of the founding partners of the law firm Pryke Lambert Leathley Russell LLP in Richmond, British Columbia, which is a firm of 21 lawyers offering a wide variety of legal services touching upon business, commercial, corporate and real estate matters as well as all facets of litigation practice. Throughout his career, Robert has focused his interest on people, their problems, the uniquely challenging issues faced by individuals in personal crises. This interest and aptitude have naturally focused his energies towards the development of a family law practice and the alternatives that are available to individuals for dispute resolution. He became a certified family law mediator in 2001 and in the year 2010 became certified as a collaborative law professional. He is presently a member of Collaborative DivorceVancouver, as well as the international Collaborative Law umbrella organization, I.A.C.P.

While Robert maintains a litigation practice in the area of family law, his passion has always moved him in the direction of exploring alternatives to the destructive and expensive court process in the resolution of the problems encountered by families, whether in the management of the distribution of their property or the determination of what is best for their children. He has become an enthusiastic collaborative law professional and endeavours to offer to his clients the perspective of having experienced and endured, the limitations of the court system in the resolution of family law disputes.

He is committed to dialogue, to understanding, to making an extra effort where it will generate respectful and dignified communication between individuals facing all manner of crises.

Over a career spanning more than 34 years, he has seen it all and has an abiding confidence in the appropriateness of respect, dignity and compassion in the business of dispute resolution. Robert is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia, the Canadian Bar Association and the Vancouver Bar Association as well as the Collaborative Divorce Vancouver, and the I.A.C.P..
